Sophie Kinsella, best known for her hugely popular Shopaholic series, has passed away at the age of 55. The author, born Madeleine Sophie Wickham, revealed last year that she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2022.
Her family announced her death on Instagram on Wednesday, writing: “Despite her illness, which she faced with unimaginable courage, Sophie considered herself truly blessed — for her wonderful family and friends, and for the extraordinary success of her writing career. She never took anything for granted and remained deeply grateful for all the love she received.”

Kinsella’s novels became a global phenomenon, selling tens of millions of copies and being translated into multiple languages. The first two books of the Shopaholic saga were adapted into the 2009 film Confessions of a Shopaholic, starring Isla Fisher.
In a 2019 interview, Kinsella explained that she often wrote about the struggles and adventures of young women, despite being a mother of five herself.
“I think there’s something thrilling about that stage of life when you’re open to possibilities in every direction,” she said. “You’re figuring out your career, looking for someone to love — everything is still ahead of you. That wide-open horizon is so exciting to me. There’s something exhilarating about meeting a stranger in a coffee shop and wondering, Where could this lead?”
