Former Rockstar Games developer Mike York has issued a strong warning to Take-Two Interactive, cautioning that continued delays could seriously damage interest in Grand Theft Auto 6. According to York, the hype surrounding the long-awaited title could “die down almost completely” if Rockstar postpones the game again.
Speaking to Esports Insider (via Dexerto), York explained that fans have already been waiting for years, and another delay could push them past their limit. “We’ve been waiting so long for GTA 6 already that if there was another delay, people would probably stop caring even more,” he said. “If Rockstar delays it again, the hype will almost completely disappear. Right now, nobody is searching for GTA 6 because there’s no news and nothing to talk about.”
York also pointed to growing frustration within the fanbase, noting that many players have started expressing indifference after being repeatedly let down. He added that excessive delays can eventually backfire, saying, “There’s a point where you delay something so much that you start to make people angry.”
“People aren’t itching to find new details or a latest leak anymore, they’re over it. They are thinking, ‘it will come out when it comes out’, as they’re so burnt out from thinking it will come out soon and then it doesn’t… And then they’re like, ‘OK, whatever…’” he added.
The game’s delay from May to November 2026 even sparked backlash in Poland’s parliament, where an opposition lawmaker labeled the postponement “a huge scandal” during a parliamentary session.
Why an Ex-Rockstar Games Developer Believes Rockstar Keeps Delaying the Game
Explaining why GTA 6 may be facing delays, York said that Rockstar is likely taking extra time to perfect the game. According to him, the studio is focused on making the title look and feel as polished as possible. He added that the game may not be fully finished yet, especially considering the massive expectations surrounding it and how much is at stake for Rockstar.
York believes Rockstar is aiming to meet very high internal standards and may not feel it has reached that level yet.
York also predicted that GTA 6 will likely launch in November 2026, calling it an ideal release window for Rockstar. He explained that the timing makes sense from a sales perspective, as releasing the game just before Christmas would maximize purchases. According to York, major studios typically delay projects only once or twice when necessary, which is why he believes the game will ultimately arrive around that period.
